HeidiSupport Grows for Meatless Monday Campaign
“Most people would eat this and like it,” he said.
This story, reported in the February 15, 2011 Des Moines Register, reflects a growing national trend, as people are increasingly taking their health more seriously. The Meatless Monday campaign encourages Americans to cut back on the artery-clogging type of fats found in meat, and replace them with heart-healthy whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. It's not hard to do, and it pays off in solid health benefits.
The huge international food supplier Sodexo recently joined the Meatless Monday movement, and is now offering meatless meals in its vast US network of hospitals, universities, senior centers and businesses. Sodexo feeds 10 million people daily.
And media mogul Oprah Winfrey has joined the Meatless Monday movement too! With food experts beside her on a recent show, Oprah announced that Harpo Studies would now be offering meatless meals on Mondays. And she encouraged her 40 million viewers to try meatless meals at home too.
With so many delicious foods and recipes available, choosing to go meatless on Monday has never been easier. Meatless Monday opens up lots of new possibilities, since looking past meat can lead to discovering whole new tastes and foods to enjoy.
Thank you Flex World Fitness for taking the lead on this popular health initiative here in our community. Look for terrific new meatless recipes at the gym and on our Facebook page. Make plans to attend our next Meatless Monday lecture coming up in early March – date to be announced soon. Join us for a fun evening and free sampling!
FWF Joins Meatless Monday Campaign
Georgetown, DE – October 27, 2010
Free Class December 6th Kicks Off Year-Round Health Initiative
Flex World Fitness in Georgetown is proud to announce its participation in the national Meatless Monday campaign. Its aim is to encourage people to improve their personal health by going meatless one day a week, thus reducing dietary saturated fat and the risk of chronic, preventable illness.
Meatless Monday is a non-profit public health initiative associated with The John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Launched in 2003, the goal of Meatless Monday is to cut saturated fat intake, which in turn reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Going meatless one day a week can also decrease our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.
Obesity is a serious health problem here in Delaware, as well as nationwide As of June 2010, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults and nearly one-third of children and teens are overweight or obese. Obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers can all be alleviated with simple changes in diet. Just one meatless day a week cuts one's saturated fat intake by an impressive 15%.
“Meatless Monday is a simple, weekly reminder to take saturated fat off our plates and replace it with nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains,” says Flex World Fitness owner Heidi Helou. She adds: “By getting a healthy start on Monday, it's easier to make smarter choices throughout the week.”
The introductory “Welcome to Meatless Monday” class will be held Monday December 6th, 12:00 noon, at the Flex World Fitness center. It will feature information on getting started, recipes, and samples. The class is free and the public is invited to attend.
As part of the ongoing campaign, Flex World Fitness will also sponsor a Meatless Monday recipe contest, beginning December 6th. New recipes will be posted each Monday, at the gym and online, to showcase healthy and delicious plant-based foods. Members are encouraged to submit their own and vote on their favorites. Monthly winners will be announced on the first Monday of each month, and will receive special Flex World Fitness prizes

FlexWorld Fitness to hold inaugural spring festival
It’s that time of year in southern Delaware – temperatures are warming up and dreams of long, fun-filled days on the beach are beginning to inch into the collective consciousness of many Sussex Countians.
Unfortunately, as clothing becomes more scant, the regret of not sticking with those well-meant New Year’s resolutions also becomes more real. But no worries, Flex World Fitness has just the thing to get the exercise regiment kick started again.
On Saturday, April 17, Georgetown’s only full-service exercise facility will present a daylong event geared toward health awareness. Billed as the organization’s inaugural “Spring into Physical Fitness” event, the day promises a little something for everyone.
“Being a part of the medical center, as well as a fitness center, we wanted to hold some type of spring event to help emphasize the important of physical fitness in all our daily lives,” says Heidi Helou, owner of Flex World. “Come out and join us for the day and get tips that will help you enjoy a healthier way of life.”
Portions of the April 17 event will benefit the Georgetown American Legion and many of the area’s war veterans, including Flex World’s first-ever “cycle-a-thon.” This high-energy event features teams of up to four participants, all peddling to benefit area veterans.
“If Mother Nature cooperates, this portion of the spring festival will be held outside under what we hope will be sunny blue skies,” says Helou. “Either way, it’s going to be a fun activity. And it only costs $25 a person, all of which goes toward the programs of the American Legion.”
Other activities for the day include blood pressure screenings, nutritional tips, massages, product tastings, door prizes, dance demonstrations and free tours of the gym. Childcare will be available, so bring the little ones along with you.
Local author James Diehl will also be on site signing copies of “Remembering Sussex County” and the award-winning “World War II Heroes of Southern Delaware.” Twenty percent of sales from “Heroes” will also be donated to the Georgetown American Legion.
“I’m excited to take part in any event that helps support our veteran’s organizations,” says Diehl, who is a member of the gym. “Flex World is a wonderful facility and I’m excited to spend a day there in something other than shorts and a t-shirt.”
